Wasim Abu Zaid is bijna tien. Hij is een van de zoons van Khaled, de directeur van het NCCR waar we voor werken. Vorig jaar in augustus was hij met zijn broer en vader te gast in Nederland. En ook dit jaar hopen we dat het in orde komt met de visa, dat de grens open gaat en ze een tijdje in Nederland vakantie kunnen hebben terwijl hun vader hier werkt.
Wasim heeft een bange tijd achter de rug. Hun flat lag net tussen de gevechten, de gebouwen van Abbas aan de ene kant, de Islamic University aan de andere kant. Dagenlang konden ze de flat niet uit. Gelukkig kwam een broer door de barricades en bracht ze eten. Als ik ze belde hoorde ik het schieten op de achtergrond. Nu is de rust weergekeerd en kunnen ze een beetje bijkomen. Fatma, onze collega op het NCCR helpt de kinderen daarbij, ze moeten zich uiten, kunnen vertellen hoe bang ze zijn geweest, vooral nu het geweld niet alleen maar kwam van Israel maar ook van binnenuit. Wasim kan goed tekenen en dit is de tekening die hij heeft gemaakt: Fatah is in gevecht met Israel, die schiet uit de lucht, en Hamas schiet weer op Fatah. En er gaan ook mensen dood die ‘niets’ zijn. Je ziet het aan de vlaggen: blauw is voor israel, groen is voor Hamas, geel is voor Fatah, en de Palestijnse vlag is voor de gewone Palestijnen.
Ik hoop dat ze spoedig naar Nederland kunnen komen voor een vakantie en ik hoop dat ik spoedig weer naar Gaza kan. De eerste buitenlanders zijn al weer aan het werk, hoor ik. Feitelijk is de situatie nu minder gespannen dan voor de machtsovername, toen er nauwelijks meer controle was op de bendes die waren ontstaan, en het risico voor buitenlanders om gekidnapt te worden te groot was om er heen te gaan, en de eerste gevechten tussen de facties waren begonnen. Maar Gaza zet zich schrap voor de boycot, waar het westen mee instemt, en tegen mogelijke acties van Israel.

Hi Anja Ik ben blij dat de situatie weer een beetje veiliger is. Ik vind de hoogte van de gebouwen in Wasim’s tekening ook erg opvallend. Ik neem aan dat het not Hamas not Fatah gebouw de flat is waar zij wonen. Ik hoop dat ze snel hier in Nederland een beetje op verhaal kunnen komen en dat Wasim weer het vrolijke jongetje kan worden dat hij was. En dat jij ook een beetje de spanning kwijtraakt.
Als mensen aan Gaza denken, denken ze vooral aan de vluchtelingenkampen en de beelden van armoedige betonnen huisjes, maar er zijn ook hoge flatgebouwen. Hoe zou je anders ook anderhalf miljoen mensen kunnen laten wonen op anderhalf keer Texel. Wasim woont op de tiende verdieping van zo’n flat.
Ik ben niet zo gauw bang, maar deze keer heb ik echt in de angst gezeten om mijn mensen. Dat is gelukkig nu weer (voorlopig, Insha’Allah) over. Ik hoop dat ze snel kunnen komen, en anders ga ik daarheen.

Wil je tegen hen zeggen dat ik met hen mee leef. En met al de andere Palestijnen. Wens ze heel veel sterkte van me. Ik hoop toch zo dat er eens snel iemand komt met dé oplossing voor vrede, waar iedereen naar luistert.
Ik vernam berichten dat Israel weer het plan heeft om Gaza te bezetten. Om nog eens olie op het vuur te gooien.
Zeg het hier maar in het engels, Corrie. Wasim leest dit weblog, althans, bekijkt de plaatjes, en hij leest engels (wat je kunt zien op zijn tekening), hij zit op een internationale school in Gaza.

I showed them the pictures about you and your brother, having fun in Amsterdam, last summer. Lately when Anja wrote about the struggle in Gaza and she could hear the shooting through the telephone, I told my son (Lucas, 12 years) about it and I remembered him of the pictures of you last summer. Ik weet dat er flatgebouwen daar zijn. De moeder van vrienden van ons woont ook ergens op de hoogste verdieping. Waar ik bedoelde is meer op het gevoel van kleinheid wat er uit Wasim’s tekening spreekt, tov het hem omringende geweld.
Ik begrijp wat je zegt, Ina. Ja ze moeten zich nietig en machteloos hebben gevoeld.

Thank you for your article and I thank all the people who wrote for us and we hope we come soon to Amsterdam like last summer, which gave us hope and fate. Maybe my borther’s drawing Wasim was just a little piece of what happened here in Gaza, but we thank God that we are all well and not hurt, but we are also so sad for hundreds of deaths and injuries.My brother and I went many times with my dad to his work and saw the suffering of many injured and disabled people, and we heard from our dad and his colleagues about how it is so hard to provide all these injured and disabled people there special needs.We pray to God to make peace in Palestine and in all othere places in the World. It’s wonderful to hear from you, Walid! You know we work on your visa, and I have the new house ready when you come, there is a very big swimming pool close, and I’m thinking of all the fun things we can do because you deserve a holiday!!!!!.
And I wish to come to Gaza soon, to see everything myself. Thank you so much for your drawing and story. Usually we only hear from the grown-ups, people in and outside of Gaza who speak of difficult political things.
I think is is very important to hear from the children too. All you want is to live, go to school, to have fun and not be scared. It’s up to the grown-ups not to forget that and to make that happen.
Wasim, you said it all with the big boom that is about to fall on the house that is not Hamas and not Fatah. It is so unfair that innocent people suffer.
I followed your adventures in Amsterdam last summer on Anja’s blog. Hope you’ll come back soon!

Myself I can’t believe that there would be war in Holland. I also hope that there will be peace soon in the world , but especially in Palestine. I am a child from the same age as you almost. My father comes also from Palestine (his picture is here on this site somewhere). I go this summer to visit my family that live in Syria. I hope you will have a fine holiday in Holland.

Mevr. Meulentbelt, leuk die foto’s ! Ma3ch Allah, prachtige mensen gewoon. Hopelijk ga ik 17 juli ook weer naar Falasteen incha Allah (Als Allah het wil), even weer met mijn familie. Ik mis de warmte van hun en de liefde. Vooral het zo onrustig is daar, wil ik weer klaar staan. Hopelijk zal de reis goed verlopen.
Mevr. van der Hart we stellen je medeleven erg op prijs. Ook al hebben wij Palestijnen in Nl het wel goed, maar de oorlog geeft ons ook veel verdriet, pijn en schade. Mijn familie in Falasteen waardeerd ook alle medeleven. Weer iemand, die wel de hulpkreten van het beroofde land hoort. May Allah give you strenght and ease your pain to overcome this great unjustice that is done to you. Know that many muslims here in Holland remember you in there prayers and ask Allah to give you a way out. Make lots of du’a yourself, because the du’a of someone who is being oppresst will allways be answerd by Allah, will it not in this life than in the hereafter.
I feel especially for you, because the husband of my children is a Palestinian and he is having a hard time now, although all his family is living outside of Palestine. We feel so bad that we can do so little to help you. We hope that the efforts of Stichting Kifaia is of little help for you.
