Ik ken de mensen van de CPT, de Christian Peace Teams, nog van vele jaren terug toen ik in Hebron was en een kolonistenmevrouw mijn camera uit mijn handen wilde slaan, en de soldaten vervolgens mijn <\/em>paspoort in beslag namen. De CPTers stonden erbij en hadden alles gezien. Misschien hielp dat, dat ik na een uurtje mijn paspoort weer terug kreeg. De teams bestaan uit vriendelijke oudere christelijke mensen, met petjes op, die in Hebron observeren wat er gebeurt, en daarmee, net als de vrouwen van Machsom Watch, hopen dat de kolonisten en de soldaten zich een beetje fatsoenlijker gedragen. Ook begeleiden ze vaak Palestijnse kinderen van en naar school, om ze enigszins te beschermen tegen de aanvallen van de kolonisten en hun kinderen. Soms tevergeefs, ze zijn ook zelf aangevallen. Uiteraard zou het leger op moeten treden tegen de kolonisten, en de kinderen beschermen tegen geweld. Maar ja, daar komt het dus vaak niet van. Uiteraard willen de kolonisten die lastige pottenkijkers graag weg hebben. Hier<\/a>. <\/p>\n

\nRELEASE: Israeli Settlers Pursue Palestinian Children on Their Way to
\nSummer Camp; Israeli Military Fails to Escort Children<\/p>\n

AT-TUWANI \u2013 On Wednesday 23 July, three Israeli settlers, one masked and
\nwielding a stick, pursued 14 Palestinian children who were on their way to
\na summer camp in At-Tuwani. The children from the villages of Tuba and
\nMaghaer Al-Abeed waited 30 minutes for the Israeli military escort that
\nshould have accompanied them on the most direct road between the villages
\nof Tuba and At-Tuwani. When the military failed to arrive, the children
\nbegan walking along a long path through the hills to At-Tuwani. When the
\nchildren neared the illegal Israeli settlement outpost of Havot Ma’on,
\nthree settlers came out from the outpost and began walking in the
\ndirection of the children. The settlers had two dogs with them.<\/p>\n

International observers yelled to the children to alert them to the
\napproaching settlers, who were pursuing them from behind. The children
\nran down and across a valley to a location further from the settlers. They
\ncontinued to At-Tuwani. The settlers remained on a hill top near Havot
\nMa\u2019on, watching the children as they walked toward the schoool.<\/p>\n

The previous day, Tuesday 22 July, the military escort never arrived to
\nescort the children to summer camp. Seven children took a long path to
\nthe school. They told international observers that at least eight other
\nchildren did not attend summer camp because they were too afraid to come
\nto school without an escort. The mayor of At-Tuwani spoke with Israeli
\nmilitary to coordinate the escort for the children. However, several
\nmilitary spokespersons and soldiers on the ground denied being ordered to
\nescort the children.<\/p>\n

In 2004 the Israeli Knesset recommended that the Israeli military carry
\nout a daily escort of the children of Tuba and Maghaer Al-Abeed to their
\nschool in At-Tuwani in response to settler violence against them. In 2006
\nIsraeli Minister of Defense stated that the illegal outpost of Havot Ma\u2019on
\nshould be dismantled because of the settlers\u2019 violence towards school
\nchildren. During the 2007-2008 school year, settlers used violence
\nagainst these children on at least 14 occasions.<\/p>\n
