In 1912 staakten de vrouwen uit de textielindustrie in Massachusetts – de slogan die ze meedroegen was: Give us bread and give us roses!

\nMet andere woorden: een loon genoeg om van te kunnen leven, maar ook de waardigheid waar vrouwen uit hogere klassen recht op hadden. Brood en rozen werd een slogan die steeds weer terug kwam in de feministische geschiedenis: de vrouwencommune waar ik in woonde heette zo, de bundeling van mijn artikelen in 1983 kreeg het als titel. Het is nog steeds een prachtige samenvatting waat het socialistische feministen om gaat. <\/p>\n

\nNo more the drudge and idler — ten that toil where one reposes,
