De aanval op Gaza is nog niet afgelopen. Ook het vissershaventje is gebombardeerd, voor de mensen die weten wat dat betekent – mijn gezin woont aan de haven – zij zijn in het familiehuis gaan wonen en voelen zich daar redelijk safe. Het wachten is nu of de tanks – en de grondtroepen – nu inderdaad Gaza binnen komen marcheren, waarna nog veel meer bloedbaden zullen volgen waarbij ook Israeli’s zullen sneuvelen.

\nHet dodental staat nu boven de driehonderd. Vanochtend is een huis gebombardeerd in Jabalya kamp, waarbij vijf zusjes zijn omgekomen. Twee van hen, Sana van vier en Samar van twee zijn al onder het puin vandaan gehaald. Ook is de Islamitische universiteit gebombardeerd. Ook een kleine gevangenis die nog niet was ontruimd, drie gevangenen die er niet uit konden kwamen om. Israel lijkt onder ‘Hamas-doelen’ alles te rekenen dat onderdeel uitmaakt van de overheid. Zo worden de tientallen jonge mannen die bij de politie werken als ‘Hamas’ en niet als burgers aangemerkt, terwijl dat gewoon mannen zijn die een baan zochten bij de overheid, de grootste, bijna enige werkgever die ze nog een baan en een salaris kan bieden, en velen daarvan niet eens lid zijn van Hamas. <\/p>\n

Dat zij als groep door een bom bijna allemaal zijn opgekomen was omdat ze er niet op rekenden, anders dan het Hamaskader, dat ook zij een doelwit zouden kunnen zijn. Mensenrechtenorganisatie Al Mezan heeft de burgerslachtoffers geteld toen er nog maar 257 waren. (Hier<\/a>) Minstens 20 kinderen. Er gaan nog veel meer doden komen omdat er nog 35 kinderen zwaargewond in de ziekenhuizen liggen. Het aantal gewonden ligt nu boven de duizend, hoewel dat moeilijk precies is vast te stellen, omdat de niet al te zwaar gewond geraakten wegens plaatsgebrek naar huis worden gestuurd, of helemaal niet komen.<\/p>\n

In de ziekenhuizen is er een rampzalige situatie, niet alleen door het aantal gewonden, maar ook omdat er door de blokkade een groot tekort is aan de meest basale middelen. Zie hier. <\/p>\n

Tom Segev schrijft (hier<\/a>) dat Israel nog steeds niets van zijn eigen geschiedenis heeft geleerd. De aanval is bedoeld – zeggen ze – om Hamas op de knieen te dwingen, wat met de blokkade nog steeds niet lukte – om ze met andere woorden, ‘een lesje te leren’. Maar zo werkt het niet. <\/p>\n

All of Israel\u2019s wars have been based on yet another assumption that has been with us from the start: that we are only defending ourselves. \u201cHalf a million Israelis are under fire,\u201d screamed the banner headline of Sunday\u2019s Yedioth Ahronoth – just as if the Gaza Strip had not been subjected to a lengthy siege that destroyed an entire generation\u2019s chances of living lives worth living.<\/p>\n

It is admittedly impossible to live with daily missile fire, even if virtually no place in the world today enjoys a situation of zero terror. But Hamas is not a terrorist organization holding Gaza residents hostage: It is a religious nationalist movement, and a majority of Gaza residents believe in its path. One can certainly attack it, and with Knesset elections in the offing, this attack might even produce some kind of cease-fire. But there is another historical truth worth recalling in this context: Since the dawn of the Zionist presence in the Land of Israel, no military operation has ever advanced dialogue with the Palestinians.<\/p>\n

Most dangerous of all is the cliche that there is no one to talk to. That has never been true. There are even ways to talk with Hamas, and Israel has something to offer the organization. Ending the siege of Gaza and allowing freedom of movement between Gaza and the West Bank could rehabilitate life in the Strip.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

En ook journalist Zvi Barel vindt dat Israel nog niets geleerd heeft. (Hier<\/a>) Nog denken ze dat je Hamas militair kunt verslaan, de leiders doden, en dat alles dan goed komt. De werkelijkheid is dat ze geen antwoord hebben op de vraag hoeveel dode Israelische soldaten ze er voor over hebben om nu grondtroepen Gaza in te sturen, en hoe ze daar vervolgens weer weg komen. Denk aan twee keer Libanon. <\/p>\n

According to the government, Israel has full legitimacy to take action against those who threaten its citizens. That is the reason the state was created and no other country would tolerate such attacks on its towns. It\u2019s a nice slogan, identical to that of Hamas: Why should Gazan citizens tolerate such a long and severe siege for so long? Can its leadership tolerate a succession of targeted killing against its leaders? And what of the killing of innocent civilians in air strikes? Hamas agreed to a cease-fire to end the violent dialogue.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It should be remembered that Israel chanted the same slogans when the Second Lebanon War began, from which it came back badly bruised. The optimistic scenario did not materialize then and it is hard to believe it will now in Gaza. The legitimacy of the Lebanon war triumphed just as the war was lost.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Unlike the Lebanon war, whose chief priority was to bring back the abducted IDF soldiers which encompassed the destruction of Hezbollah\u2019s military \u201cinfrastructure,\u201d the Gaza operation\u2019s motivation is different: Halting rocket-firing at the Negev and destroying Hamas\u2019 rule. A new order will be set up in the occupied territories and the PA, and Abbas will be brought back to Gaza under the Israeli military\u2019s aegis. Just before we get lost in this dream scenario let us examine reality.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Six months ago Israel asked and received a cease-fire from Hamas. It unilaterally violated it when it blew up a tunnel, while still asking Egypt to get the Islamic group to hold its fire. Are conditions enabling the return of a ceasefire no longer available? Hamas has clear conditions for its extension: The opening of the border crossings for goods and cessation of IDF attacks in Gaza, as outlined in the original agreement. Later, Hamas wants the cease-fire to be extended to the West Bank. Israel, for its part, is justifiably demanding a real calm in Gaza; that no Qassam or mortar shell be fired by either Hamas, Islamic Jihad or any other group.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Essentially, Israel is telling Hamas it is willing to recognize its control of Gaza on the condition that it assumes responsibility for the security of the territory, like Hezbollah controls southern Lebanon. It is likely that this will be the outcome of a wide-scale operation in the Gaza Strip if Israel decides it does not want to rule Gaza directly. Why, then, not forgo the war and agree to these conditions now?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Segev en Barel gaan beiden uit, als zovelen, van de gedachte dat de Israelische regering in principe te goeder trouw is, en een oplossing wil, ook al zijn ze nu kennelijk te stom om te begrijpen dat het zo niet gaat.
