Veel van de schulden zijn tot stand  gekomen in een systeem van uitbuiting waar het noorden rijker en het zuiden nog armer van is geworden.<br \/>\nDit is de tijd om die actie met meer kracht te voeren: in plaats van alleen hulpgoederen te sturen, hoe welkom ook, is een kwijtschelding van de schulden een werkelijke bijdrage voor de getroffen landen om een wederopbouw mogelijk te maken.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nMeer informatie op de <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tni.org\/asem\/index.htm\">TNI website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Onderteken de Jubilee South Sign-On letter, hieronder te lezen, op lidy@jubileesouth.org<br \/>\nLees je dit na 6 januari, de actie krijgt een tweede fase op het World Social Forum van 25-30 januari. <\/p>\n<p>Sign-On Letter:<\/p>\n<p>In the face of Debt and Disaster: Long-lasting Relief for the Peoples of<br \/>\nthe South!<\/p>\n<p>We express our deepest sympathy and solidarity for the peoples of Sri<br \/>\nLanka, India, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and many other South countries<br \/>\nwho are currently suffering from the devastation unleashed by the tsunami<br \/>\nlast December 26. We cannot overemphasize how profoundly saddened we are<br \/>\nby the climbing death toll, numbering over 55,000 as of Dec 29, the many<br \/>\nthousand others missing or injured, the destruction of property, the loss<br \/>\nof livelihoods and the widespread dislocation of communities.<\/p>\n<p>The Philippines was also severely hit by super-typhoons in the last few<br \/>\nweeks, leading to the death of more than 1,000 people, the destruction of<br \/>\nover 10,000 hectares of farmlands, and the rendering 53,000 families<br \/>\nhomeless and without access to clean water.<\/p>\n<p>Now, more than ever, at their hour of greatest need, the peoples of the<br \/>\nSouth must be heeded in their long-standing demand for debt cancellation.<br \/>\nIn the face of this massive destruction, northern and international<br \/>\ncreditors should not continue to hold South peoples in bondage for debts<br \/>\nthat have in large part, only contributed to their impoverishment and<br \/>\ndeprivation.<\/p>\n<p>If there is any measure of sincerity in the outpouring of compassion from<br \/>\nNorth governments for the peoples of the South, let this be through<br \/>\nconcrete action. In addition to emergency relief operations and<br \/>\nrehabilitation, what we need immediately is:<\/p>\n<p>UNCONDITIONAL DEBT CANCELLATION NOW!<\/p>\n<p>Southern governments should not continue to prioritize debt service, and<br \/>\nsquander much needed public funds:<\/p>\n<p>STOP PAYING ONEROUS and ILLEGITIMATE DEBTS!
