Coinciding with world-wide protests at dozens of locations
June 5, 2007, will be the fortieth anniversary of the malignant Israeli occupation of the West Bank, Gaza Strip and Golan Heights. The present suffering and bloodshed at Gaza and Sderot are a direct outcome of the policy of occupation, settlement and killing. Only the end of that policy and the signing of a just peace could put an end to violence and to the continuing injustice against the Palestinian People.
“40 Occupation” is a convergence of peace activists and groups (including Gush Shalom, Anarchists Against the Wall, Women’s Peace Coalition, the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions, Yesh Gvul, Indymedia,Ta’ayush, Zochrot, Hadash and others) which jointly organize protest actions marking forty years of occupation. In order to bring about a concrete change in the situation and the end of the occupation, there is needed a tactic of wide opposition. Therefore, the model of convergence was chosen which was used with great success in other struggles, for example the 1999 Seattle protests against the World Trade Organization meeting. Convergence implies public organising around a common goal, relying on coordinated but autonomous and decentralized activity.
For six days, June 5 to 10 – corresponding to the days of the 1967 War – a wide spectrum of events will take place, including exhibitions, demonstrations, theatre plays, academic conferences etc., in order to place a the occupation and the millions suffering under its yoke on the public agenda. June 9 and 10 had been declared as International Days of Protest Against the Israeli Occupation, and we will hold The main march and rally on Saturday, June 9.

June 1 from 10:00 am at the Port of Tel Aviv – “Until She Opens her Eyes”, an event organized by the Human Rights groups, including presentations, testimonies, artistic performances, theatrical performances, a panel discussion by writers, exhibition of photos. June 2 – an Israeli-Palestinian car convoy, organized by the Geneva Initiative, leaving the Redding Parking Lot in north Tel-Aviv at 10:30 am. In Jerusalem, the Israeli and the Palestinian convoys will join up and together round the Old City and wind up at The Mount of Olives, where a joint rally will take place with Knesset Members, Members of the Palestinian Legislative Council and artists. June 2 to 8 – Every evening at 21:00 a panel discussion on Forty Years of Occupation will be broadcast on the “Mikan” Channel on the cable and satellite TV, as well as on www.actv.co.il.

June 5 – testimonies from the Occupied Territories, a photo exhibition and presentation of documentary films at the the Tel-Aviv Cinemateque, organized by Machsom Watch, Bereaved Families’ Forum, Fighters for Peace, PCATI, Yesh Din, IPCRI. A checkpoint, similar to those erected by the army in the Territories, will be erected on the plaza and all visitors will have to pass through it.

Kan deze agenda niet naar alle kranten in Nederland ?
Dat geef de mens inderdaad weer een beetje moed. Ik kreeg vandaag een krant toegestuurd van Christenen voor Israel “Israelaktueel”. Hoe ze aan mij adres komen? Ik heb er niet om gevraagd, maar het is wel eens goed dat je zoiets eens onder ogen krijgt. Maar je wordt er niet vrolijk van. Er staat een stukje in van G. Hette Abma over Dries van Agt. Dolle Dries staat er boven. ‘Prins van Palestina’noemen ze hem. Een Arafatsjaal is inmiddels om zijn nek gehangen. Je waant je toch helemaal in een carnavaleske sfeer tijdens de manifestatie van de Palestijnse activisten in de Doelen van de Maasstad. Naast de paljas uit Nijmegen speur je direct naar de aanwezigheid van de onvermijdelijke page uit Achmeddam”. enz. enz. Men houdt je wel in de gaten. Hoe zat dat eigenlijk met de onopgeefbare verbintenis van de christenen en de joden voor en tijdens de tweede oorlog. Kan iemand mij daar antwoord op geven?
Ik las in Kerkinformatie van mei 2007 onder Boekbespreking, dat Dr. René Süss een boek geschreven heeft “Luthers Theologisch Testament, Over Joden en hun leugens, inleiding vertaling, commentaar”. Daarin schrijft hij dat Maarten Luther in verschillende geschriften nogal vijandig over de Joden geschreven heeft.
Ik zou, als ik jou was, Corrie, alleen maar blij zijn dat “de christenen” hun antisemitisme hebben afgeschud.
Dat Luther vijandig tegenover joden was, is niet verrassend, dat was iedere christen in die tijd.
Maar wat heeft dit alles met 40 jaar bezetting te maken?
We moeten de situatie in Israël/Palestina beoordelen op z’n eigen merites en niemand, van welke kant ook, moet er de Tweede Wereldoorlog, of het christelijk of islamitisch antisemitisme bijhalen. Wat telt is de situatie zoals deze nu is en hoe tot een oplossing te komen.
Wees blij dat er nog wat protest in Israël is, put daar enige hoop uit.
Ik ben het zelf eens met Amoz Oz toen hij zei dat de oplossing dichtbij is, met name omdat, ondanks het gedraai en de weerbarstigheid van de leiders over en weer, de bevolking aan beide zijden de situatie zo spuug- en spuug zat is dat dit conflict zal doven omdat er gewoon niemand meer is die nieuwe brandstof wil toevoegen.
voorbeelden:
– een meerderheid van de Israëlische bevolking wil gewoon af van bezette gebieden en nederzettingen en wil een Palestijnse staat.
– de Palestijnse bevolking is de hele zelfmoordcarroussel in meerderheid beu.
Er zal in de komende twee jaar voldoende internationale druk ontstaan om de bezetting te beëindigen, daar ben ik van overtuigd.
Hoe Luther, de kerk in WOII of een christelijk groepje nu over joden denkt is naar mijn mening totaal irrelevant en gaat voorbij aan het probleem van hier en nu.
P.S. Sorry hoor maar maar ik heb Van Agt altijd een paljas gevonden. Daar verandert z’n houding in de Palestina kwestie niets aan.

Ik vroeg mij af hoe de christenen over de Joden voor en tijdens de 2e wereldoorlog dachten, (Ik ben geboren in 1947) omdat er christenen zijn die het steeds over die onopgeefbare verbondenheid met de Joden hebben. Ik heb zo het vermoeden dat het pas na WOII is. Uit schaamte of schuldgevoel dat er in de WO II en er net na, zo weinig voor de Joden is gedaan, misschien? Totdat men van de Holocaust hoorde en zich de verhalen over het uitverkoren volk uit de bijbel herinnerden, dat ze het nu goed willen maken en nu maar alles accepteren wat Israel doet? Daar heeft Maarten Luther toch ook wel mee te maken denk ik. Wat dat met het probleem hier en nu te maken heeft is, dat wij moeten proberen deze christenen ervan te overtuigen dat zij niet in alles achter Israel moeten blijven staan. Hoe zegt Hajo Heyer dat ook weer: “Het zijn je vrienden die jou je feilen tonen”. Dat dat heel moeilijk is weet ik maar al te goed. Maar daar moeten we mee blijven doorgaan.
Ter gelegenheid van het Veertig jarig bestaan van de Bezetting is een belangrijk detail de meesten ontgaan. Namelijk de directe schending van kinderrechten door willekeurige arrestaties van kinderen en hun gevangenschap onder omstandigheden van misbruik, vernedering en psychische marteling vandaag de dag. Israel is een van de ondertekenaars van de dode letters van Het Verdrag van de Rechten van het Kind, immers ze zijn voor die kinderen niet tot leven gekomen.
