Letter from Ramadan (4)

I have to explain this a little to Dutch people, Ramadan.
Ramadan lives in Bureije camp, it is one of the ‘Middle Camps’. He works in Khan Younis, which is further down south, or in Gaza City, where the headquarters of the NCCR are, the organisation for people with disabilities we both work for, up north. Normally you could drive from one point to the other in half an hour, it is only 40 kilometres. But now it takes hours, or even days, or it is impossible for weeks. When the Israeli army decides to close off Gaza is is not only impossible to leave the Strip, also Gaza is divided into three parts and people can’t go from one part to the other. The inside closures happen many times, sometimes even daily. In that case Ramadan can’t take the road to his job and drive there with his colleagues, and he has to go to the beach, and see where the tanks are, and cross the beach walking. People who have difficulty walking, older people, pregnant women, small children disabled people or people carrying heavy loads take a donkey car or a horse.
I have witnessed this several times, people walking along the beach, allways afraid the shooting will start again, ambulances struggling to drive through the sand.
Ramandan has written us al letter, explaining things are getting even worse…

The High Cost of Israel’s Gaza Mission: Innocent Victims
http://www.nytimes.com/2004/10/10/international/middleeast/10mideast.html?

By GREG MYRE

JABALIYA REFUGEE CAMP, Gaza Strip, Oct. 9 – With helicopters circling overhead and tanks parked on the fringes of the largest Palestinian refugee camp, Israeli forces are trying to pick off masked militants who are shooting at the soldiers and launching rockets into Israel.
The mission is difficult. The militants are elusive, darting through the camp’s narrow alleys, and civilians are everywhere, with children filling the streets. The result is that many of the casualties are innocents. Lees verder

Potidool

Ramadan’s reaction

Dear Anja;

I am really very sorry for what was happening because of my writings, I wanted
only to be a light guest on the weblog not to create those problems. I know
that your weblog was very nice before I came to it and caused those endless
debates. So, I do not want to increase it and thanks from the bottom of my
heart for the efforts you are devoting on behalf of us. I appreciate it
tremendeously and I appreciate very much the help and support of our friends
in Holland, it is very clear how much they are connected to us. This is our
destiny as Palestinians, to be very debatable and find Israelis fighting us.
