Fifth column, traitors, collaborators – this is what Hamas spokesmen call those whom they hold responsible for the civil war in the Gaza Strip. They point to a “treacherous stream in the Fatah movement,” warning that Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas is “incapable of taking control of it.” They are referring to Mohammed Dahlan and his associates.

Welcome to ‘Palestine’

How troublesome the Muslims of the Middle East are. First, we demand that the Palestinians embrace democracy and then they elect the wrong party – Hamas – and then Hamas wins a mini-civil war and presides over the Gaza Strip. And we Westerners still want to negotiate with the discredited President, Mahmoud Abbas. Today “Palestine” – and let’s keep those quotation marks in place – has two prime ministers. Welcome to the Middle East.

The old dream of Ariel Sharon is becoming a reality: Palestinians are killing Palestinians, and Israel is counting the number of victims with great satisfaction. The tears of Israeli leaders are crocodile tears, and their claims that they are sorry for the tragic developments in Gaza are mere hypocrisy. The bloody confrontations were predictable, and the Israeli-US responsibility and active involvement are crystal clear.

Over Dries van Agt
Vanochtend in Trouw, een artikel van Jaap Hamburger en Martin Siepermann over de wijze waarop er wordt gereageerd, onder andere door columnist Ephimenco, op de stelllingname van Van Agt over Israel/Palestina. Onderstaande versie is wat uitgebreider dan wat in Trouw is verschenen.

Afgelopen week mengde zich ook Sylvain Ephimenco in het debat over de opvattingen van Dries van Agt betreffende het Israëlisch-Palestijnse conflict (de Verdieping, 14 juni). Om zijn oordeel over onze voormalige premier kracht bij te zetten, kroop Ephimenco in de huid van een meedogenloze Hamas-strijder die Van Agt prijst, en passant het stereotype versterkend dat alle Palestijnen terroristen zijn.

Te gast: historicus Ilan Pappé (zie hier en hier) auteur van Ethnic Cleansing in Palestine, over de historische betekenis van Gaza – niet meer dan een stukje land ter grootte van 2% van het oorspronkelijke Palestina. Eens, als havenstad en als doorgangsroute langs de Middellandse Zee, een welvarend deel van Palestina. Wat er nu gebeurde in de Gazastrip is alleen te begrijpen tegen de achtergrond van de manier waarop Gaza van een zelfstandige en welvarende stad met achterland door de bezetting veranderde in een gevangenis. Geen van de westerse interpretaties, dat het hier zou gaan om het expantionisme van Al-Qaeda achtige groepen, een uitbreiding van het islamistische fundamentalisme of de infiltratie van Iran, dan wel het nieuwe hoogtepunt in de ‘clash of civilisations’ snijden hout. Wat de huidige situatie heeft veroorzaakt is 60 jaar verdrijving en onteigening, bezetting en gevangenschap, zegt Pappe.
