Chronology of the Latest Crisis in the Middle East

The Bush administration, Congress, and the press repeatedly echo the Israeli government’s position that the current warfare between Israel versus Palestinians and Lebanese is a consequence of the “kidnapping” of Israeli Corporal Gilad Shalit by Hamas-led militants on June 25, 2006 and the “abduction” of two more Israeli soldiers by Hezbollah on July 12, 2006. Yet every hostile action in this part of the Middle East is seen by someone as a response to a prior action by the other side. The only logical starting point for objectively examining the sequence of causes and effects is to begin with a watershed event that was clearly independent of any preceding military or political provocation. In 2006 that event was the Palestinian elections of January 25.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s address to both houses of Congress was perhaps the most skilled use of Newspeak since George Orwell invented the term in his novel 1984. (He had help: author and Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Weisel reportedly drafted large sections of the speech.) Just as Orwell’s totalitarian propagandists proclaimed WAR IS PEACE and Israeli government signs placed at the Wall (sorry, fence) at the entrance to Bethlehem greet Palestinians with the blessing PEACE BE UNTO YOU, so Olmert declared in Washington: UNILATERAL REALIGNMENT IS PEACE.

To failure’s credit

The bad (and predictable) news: Israel is going to come out of this war with the lower hand. The good (and surprising) news: This ringing failure could spell good tidings. If Israel had won the battles in an easy, sweeping victory of the kind Israelis prayed so much for, it would have caused enormous damage to Israel’s security policies. Another slam-bam win would have brought disaster upon us. Drugged with power, drunk with victory, we would have been tempted to implement our success in other arenas. Dangerous fire would have threatened the entire region and nobody knows what might have resulted.

Dames en heren,
Wat op het ogenblik in het nabije Oosten gebeurt is niet meer en niet minder dan het zoveelste teken van het morele faillissement van de westelijke wereld. Dit ondanks het feit dat de geografische plek waar al die gruwelijkheden en onmenselijkheden gebeuren in het nabije Oosten ligt. Waarom is dan toch de westelijke wereld zo sterk medeverantwoordelijk voor de slachtingen die daar plaatsvinden? Hiervoor zijn diverse redenen aan te voeren:

It’s the occupation, stupid!

Ik herinner me een gesprek met dr. Haider Abdel Shafi, jaren geleden, in Gaza. Abdel Shafi was eens de aanvoerder van de onderhandelingen in Madrid. Een vooraanstaand man, in de tachtig en helaas te oud (vindt hij zelf) om zich nog actief in de politiek te begeven, onkreukbaar en onafhankelijk. Iemand die behoorlijk wat kritiek had op Arafat, die in zijn ogen nooit de handtekening onder de Oslo overeenkomst had mogen zetten, niet had mogen zeggen dat hij er mee accoord ging dat de staat Israel gevestigd zou zijn op 78% van het oorspronkelijke mandaatgebied Palestina, zonder garantie dat Israel zich zou houden aan de ontruiming van de Palestijnse gebieden. De taxichauffeur die me eens naar het huis bracht van Abdel Shafi zei het kort: ‘doctor Haider, he clean’.

In 2001 richtte ze samen met Harry de Winter ‘Een Ander Joods Geluid’ op, omdat ze vond dat je als jood ook kritiek moeten kunnen uiten op Israël. Vandaag is dat geluid des te belangrijker in de discussie over Israël en Libanon.
